I've just added you because we have a handful of top notch friends in common. Somehow I missed meeting you at elkay's party in Seattle, though.

Excellent! Added.

What do you look like? Are you sure we didn't meet?

I'm really tall (plus had heels, so was 6'+ that night), had a brown dress & little denim jacket and hair in knots due to an awkward state of growing-my-hair-out mess. I'm sure we didn't meet. I saw you, but we were never talking to the same people, and you left early and I think I asked [livejournal.com profile] optic who was that girl? And he said Alice... and I thought damn, that's Lindsey and John Yee's Alice, and now I know you're also Tom and Mike and Peter and everyone else's Alice. It's a tiny little world!

Yeah, doesn't sound like we have ever met. I was very flustered that day because on my way to the party I went to get gas, and ended up spilling gas ALL OVER myself, and was just reeking of gasoline the entire time. It was very uncomfortable.

You know John as well?! That's crazy. John used to live here in Seattle, of course; I met him in 1997 because he went to high school with a friend from college. Obviously Lindsey and I both went to Wellesley. I met Mike at Microsoft in 1996 (!!) and he and I have sort of stayed in touch ever since; Tom and I have about 1000 mutual friends, although we never met until a few months ago; and I met Peter through Tom. Tiny small world.

Here's a taste of how this could go on foreverandeverandever: I met John in Boston, through Lindsey, but I'm actually from Portland, which is where John, as you probably know, was raised on a humble dim sum cart in Chinatown. John designed record sleeves and a web site for my now long-defunct record label (http://www.contrastmusic.com/recordings/) back in the day.

Of the Mike/Peter/Tom triumvirate I'm pretty sure I've known Mike the longest, then Peter, and I never talked to Tom that much before Lindsey's party but he did see me have a stupid tearful schoolgirl breakdown over some dumb guy at Aro.Space many years ago, which he classily pretended not to remember when we were recently re-introduced. And I'm moving to Seattle early next year, and once upon a time I lived in New York (where, incidentally, I was born), and you're moving there, and John lives there now, and Lindsey and I live in England.

This could get even more tangled when you move to NYC. Maybe we should just pretend we've known each other for ten years, and that way it won't feel so odd when we keep making friends with each other's friends.

Oh shit you're THAT Courtney?! John and Lindsey both used to talk about you alllll the time. I definitely know who you are now. I have a feeling I have come within a hair's breadth of meeting you a number of times.

John and I actually dated (!) for a summer and some change back in 97-98ish (aka, the stone age). I see him every time I go to NY, which isn't that often (well, until now). Until very recently he lived with my friend Jeanie that I went to Wellesley with (who is in Boston now). I grew up in Westchester, and I was born in England, so the plot thickens even thicker.

I agree, we should fabricate a long history together. Like, remember when we saw _____ at the _____ in 199X? That was awesome!

I KNOW, so imagine how gutted I was when I hadn't realized you'd be at that party, and then I asked Mike 'who was that girl' after you'd gone and he said Alice, and I went 'that Alice(?!)' and it became clear that our fate was to continue passing in the night forEVER. When you come back to Seattle for a visit we'll have to arrange to be in the same place at the same time.

Or we could just let the mystery live on. Speaking of which I totally forgive you for stealing my boyfriend in Junior year and I'm glad you forgave me for stealing yours in Senior year to get you back, and I'll never forget our joint 21st birthday party, which was so scandalous it doesn't even bear talking about.
